2015 Malliouhana Poetry Competitionback to stories

The University of the West Indies Open Campus in conjunction with the Anguilla Library Service, the Department of Youth and Culture and the Anguilla Community College is pleased to launch the Malliouhana Poetry Competition for 2015. The Malliouhana Poetry Competition was conceptualized to encourage literacy and artistic expression as well as to promote an ethos of social, cultural, and political awareness. The inaugural launch took place in 2007 when twenty-seven participants entered the competition.

Over the years the competition has attracted entries from over one hundred poets from all age ranges and a number of these poems will be featured in the upcoming Anguilla poetry anthology "Where I see the Sun-Contemporary Poetry in Anguilla" scheduled to be published in 2015 by House of Nehesi - Sint Maarten. This year the theme for the competition is "Jollification in the 21st Century-Forging an Anguillian Identity" and is dedicated to the memory of Cultural Activist- Linda T. Lake.

The 2015 competition will feature two categories of Performance Poetry (Junior Category: Ages 8-15 years and Adult/Senior Category: Ages 16- Adult) to encourage entries from the cohort of poets who have been promoting the growth of spoken word and rap poetry among the youthful demographic on the island. The Spoken Word/Performance Poetry genre is a consonant with the African-Caribbean oral tradition and is finding increasing acceptance within the canon as oraliterature. The Spoken Word/Performance Poetry categories will be judged in two stages Poetry on the Page and Live Performance.

Members of the public (Anguillians, and residents on Anguilla) are being invited to enter the competition. Entry forms as well as the rules and regulations for the competition may be obtained from the Anguilla Public Library. The deadline date for entries is April 13, 2015.

Winning entries will receive various prizes and plaques donated by sponsors across the island.
